Searcys, the UK’s oldest British caterer is celebrating its 175th anniversary by unveiling a beautiful recreation of a royal wedding cake originally created 126 years ago by its founder, John Searcy…and it’s incredible!
To celebrate this iconic milestone, the brand has looked back through their archives to the royal wedding of Princess Maud (then the future Queen of Norway) to Prince Carl of Denmark in 1896. With many royal members in attendance, including Queen Victoria (grandmother of the bride) the Prince and Princess of Wales and Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark, the event was a highly-anticipated one and deserved a truly show-stopping wedding cake. The original design was therefore crafted by founder John Searcy who actually, at the time, came out of retirement in order to bake the multi-tiered, highly elegant design for the wedding. The breathtaking design was crafted out of multiple tiers and showcased the baker’s skill, featuring everything from fine sugar work flowers to rose designs and angels, alongside the Royal Arms of England and Denmark.
As a tribute to its founder John Searcy, Searcys has teamed up with celebrated baker, Elizabeth Solaru of Elizabeth’s Cake Emporium to recreate the original cake. Working alongside Searcys own pastry chef, Yvonne Graham, the talented pair have brought to life the original creation, taking three weeks to meticulously recreate the design. Constructed from Dundee fruit cake, the five-tiered design is covered in marzipan alongside white and gold lattice work icing and topped with highly elegant sugar work, featuring flowers, fruits, cherubs and lions. A real masterpiece!
You’ll be pleased to hear then, that the cake will be making its ways across Searcys’ array of restaurants throughout the summer, from National Baking Day on 17th May 2022. You’ll even be able to purchase a slice and experience the wonderful creation for yourself at venues including 116 Pall Mall, The Pump Room in Bath, Searcys at the Gherkin and St Pancras Brasserie. And, the elegant Princess Maud Wedding cake can even be made-to-order for any wedding celebration booked across Searcys’ sumptuous array of venues!
