When Courtney Stokes excitedly unwrapped a gift from her partner on Christmas Day, she had no idea of the path she was about to embark on. The gift was, of course, a camera (this is Behind the Lens after all) and ever since that serendipitous winter, Courtney has been travelling the world camera in-hand.
But instead of chasing sunsets, Courtney Stokes has been chasing love stories across all corners of the globe. Her natural flair for the art of photography is undeniably apparent, and though a whimsical light glides through her portfolio there is also an overwhelming strength found in the frames she captures. These are stories made for the big screen.

#1 Take us back to the beginning, how did you end up in wedding photography?
“I had never held a professional camera until my partner bought me a camera to take nice photos with whilst we were travelling. I quickly learnt that I had an eye for it and would practice at every opportunity. Once I returned from travelling I knew that I HAD to make this my career. I then came across destination weddings and elopements and immediately knew it was my dream job, it what I was supposed to do!”
#2 What are your top tips for brides & grooms on their wedding day?
“Hire a photographer you trust and let them do their job. If you love their work, you know that your photos will turn out exactly how you want. Also, make sure your photographer is someone you vibe with. You will spend a lot of time with them on the day and during some of your most intimate moments. Make sure you feel comfortable with this.”
“When it comes to being photographed, It may feel a little odd at first but I promise the thought is worse than the reality. Oh and one more thing! Ask your photographer for tips on how to get the most out of your photos on the day, it’s best to ask these questions at the start so you can plan your day with these things in mind.”
#3 Travelling plays such a large role in your work, what has been your favourite destination to shoot so far?
“So far I would say Santorini. The sunsets, the white washed buildings and the backdrop are picture-perfect.”
#4 How would you describe your photographic style?
“My style is cinematic but also editorial. I want people to not only be able to feel the atmosphere through my photos, but also feel like they were destined to be on the front of a glossy magazine.”
#5 Why were these your favourite five shots?
“All for different reasons! Some showcase my favourite locations but every one represents a moment in time. The Cornwall shot (the windswept couple in the waves), for example, was taken at sunrise. It was raining but then all of a sudden it cleared and the sun peaked through the clouds for just five minutes and this magic happened. The waves, the way her hair blew in the wind. It looked so dramatic but beautiful.”
“Elopements are also one of my favourite things to photograph. There is something so raw, adventurous and intimate about being able to document someone’s day when it’s such a small group.”
